Introduction

Corporate governance is an essential part of managing modern corporate organisations irrespective of whether they operate in the private or public space.

It has to do with the rules, processes, and practices of managing a company. It is the framework of rules and practices that defines relationships within the organisation and between the organisation and its external publics.

Historically, corporate governance has been identified more with the private sector. However, it is increasingly becoming relevant in the public sector, especially in privatised or government-controlled corporations. Apart from defining the power relationship within an organisation, which is critical to its survival, corporate governance also deals with the conduct and behaviour of officials within the company, both in terms of their relationship with other officials and with the company.

The third component of corporate governance is its concern with the efficient management of resources through a transparent and accountable process, and in the process, ensuring a balance between economic and social goals of the company, as well as between corporate and community goals.

This course will expose participants to these components of governance and their relevance to the contemporary demands of modern organisations.
